The Floibanen funicular is one of Bergen’s most loved attractions. In just a few minutes you rise high above the harbour to reach Mount Fløyen where trails viewpoints and cosy cafes await and it was a good introduction to our Bergen Weekend trip. Here’s a friendly guide with tips to make your trip up the mountain unforgettable.
A return ticket for two adults cost us NOK 240 (under £18) purchased easily at the ticket machines at the bottom station. Cards are widely accepted. Trains run every few minutes so there’s no long wait between departures.
Your trip up the Floivan starts at the Floibanen - the funicular that runs up the mountain at very regular intervals. Purchase your ticket at the bottom from the machine (credit cards expected for the NOK 240 - under £18 for 2) and then jump on the next train up the mountain.
The cars have a glass roof and big windows so views are good from anywhere. But if it’s your first trip sit in the last car facing backwards. The view of Bergen and the harbour shrinking below you is simply stunning.
Most people follow the crowd to the right after leaving the station. Instead turn left and walk just a couple of minutes uphill. You’ll find a small bench shaded by a few trees with a more peaceful and photogenic view of the city.
This is where most visitors end up but it can get crowded. It’s fine if you need a quick drink while waiting for the next train down.
For something more authentic stroll about 15 minutes through the woods. You’ll reach a charming walker’s cafe where pancakes and hot drinks are the reward for your effort. A much calmer option.
Mount Fløyen is crisscrossed with trails suitable for all ages. The woodland path to the walker’s cafe is just one of them. Families will find play areas and gentle gravel tracks while keen hikers can continue further into the mountains for half-day adventures.
If you can spare the time stay for sunset. The colours over the harbour and fjords are unforgettable. The best spots are either the main viewing area near the station or that quieter viewpoint bench mentioned earlier. Bring a jacket as it can turn chilly even on summer evenings.
Just 6–8 minutes from the bottom station to the top of Mount Fløyen.
Yes! Even if Bergen is misty the trails are atmospheric and sometimes you break through the clouds for a magical view.
Absolutely. A well-marked path leads up the mountain in about 45–60 minutes. Many visitors ride up and walk down.
Yes you can buy single tickets if you plan to walk either up or down. Prices are posted at the ticket machines.
