Why Experience the Gingerbread Boat in Prague as a Couple?

The cruise is a gentle trip around the Vlatava River seeing the sights of the city and the castle from the water. Add in a couple of traditional snacks and you have an interesting trip out, certainly different to the normal expected boat trips.

What is the Gingerbread Boat?

Wander down to the Charles Bridge and you'll see 'sailors' selling tickets to a boat trip up and down the river. Not just a boat trip, there's a traditional gingerbread snack and a choice of drink to get you settled in. It's maybe not the most luxurious boat as it is very small, just 2 by 2 people sitting across the boat, but it's interesting and can go places the large boat doesn't. It's certainly a little different.

What is the Gingerbread Boat?

It's a small covered boat that leaves from an 'underground' harbour, visits the Charles Bridge in close up, potentially 'Little Venice' (not always) then heads down stream for the rest of the trip, at least as far as the bridge by the Slivovitz Museum. As you board you are offerd your choice of taditional gingerbread or ice-cream and beer or lemonade (or, I think, hot drinks). Explore the Vlatava river and have a traditional snack.

Why the Gingerbread Boat is Perfect for Couples (and others)

Sat cuddled up for the trip, sampling traditional snacks and experiencing the sights and sounds of the city from the river. What could be better! There is light recorded commentary but apart from that you can be left to yourselves. It's a small boat so there's no moving around, just sit and enjoy the experience.

What to Expect on the Gingerbread Boat

For those wanting the perfect Instagram photo you are going to get close to the water and see the bridges and city sky scapes, including the castle, from the water. There's snacks and hot and cold drinks included in the deal, although usually I've consumed them before we pull away into the river. Enjoy a pleasant commentary as you drift lazily along the river on a guided cruise.

Tips for Enjoying the Gingerbread Boat as a Couple

Try an early / late Cruise: The golden hour adds a magical glow to the experience if you can time a cruise for the start / end of the day.

Dress Warmly: Even with indoor seating, it can get chilly on the river, especially in winter.

Take cash: The 'sailors' want cash so have some available.

Embrace the food: Enhance the gingerbread with mulled wine or hot chocolate for a romantic touch.

The Best Time to Experience the Gingerbread Boat

Almost whatever time of year you are visiting Prague will be suitable for a boat trip, but if you are there in the heat then I can imagine middle of the day / early afternoon could be a little uncomfortable. Picking early morning and late afternoon, when the sun is lower and softer, can provide excellent photo opportunities.
