Introduction: Why Take a Nuclear Bunker Tour in Prague?
The bunker tour is something quite different, certainly not a tour I've seen elsewhere.
It's an insight into what was happening on the other side of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War, an era I remember.
It starts in the city and shows you some of the 'modern' history of Prague, history from a period of my own life...
Talking about how the population was controlled and monitored from ominous looking buildings, after a walk around the streets of the city you jump on a tram for a few stops out to the residential area.
Here we were walked to a bunker with a solid front door, walked in and shown around.
We left thankful that the bunker was never called into iuse.
What to Expect on a Nuclear Bunker Tour
Step Into History: Learn how Prague prepared for nuclear threats during the Cold War, and why. The why to me was more surprising than the how.
Cold War Propaganda: Discover the tools and techniques used to influence public opinion. Our guide explained how many people could fit into a bunker and how long for. It didn't take long to realise it was a small proportion of the city and only a few weeks of post-apopolytic event before they's run out of supplies. The bunkers were just for show, not survival.
The Velvet Revolution: Gain insights into the peaceful movement that transformed Czech history and brought it to the city it is today.
Explore Hidden Tunnels: Navigate dimly lit passageways and rooms filled with artifacts. The highlight of the tour, especially for me. This is why I booked it. Taken down into tunnels still holding artifacts and information from 'the other side' of the Cold War.
It's a unique and memorable tour idea, far from typical tourist activities. Certainly something you'll remember.
